Anthony Caruana has been searching for a decent keyboard for the iPad. He thinks he may have finally found it.
I have to admit that I’ve been on a quest. Ever since the first iPad was released I’ve been trying to find a way to make it a replacement for a laptop. I’ve solved many of the issues like finding apps for accessing files I store online, an office suite and other everyday tools. But I’m a writer and while the iPad’s on-screen keyboard is OK for tapping out the odd email and web address I’ve been searching for a decent keyboard.
While I was traveling recently, I picked up a Logitech Ultrathin Keyboard Cover. After a week of using the Ultrathin I can say it’s the most comfortable iPad keyboard I’ve ever used. The Ultrathin sticks to the iPad using magnets. There’s a groove built into the device so the iPad sits up nicely making the combination look like a small laptop.
The keyboard connects to the iPad using Bluetooth. It charges using a regular USB cable connected to a computer. According to Logitech, the Ultrathin’s battery will last about six months when used for two hours per day. We’ve been using it every day for the last ten days and forgotten to turn it off but it’s still going strong.
The keyboard is smaller than a full-sized one but doesn’t feel too cramped. The keys have good feel and are comfortable. Our only criticism is there’s no light on the “Caps Lock” so we couldn’t tell if we’d tapped it by accident.
Logitech Ultrathin Keyboard Cover retails for $100. It’s not the cheapest iPad accessory around but it’s good.
